In Need of a Hug comes from a place of loneliness and longing. After ending a long relationship, I found myself missing not just the person, but the warmth—the simple act of being held. Growing up in an Asian culture where hugs and touches weren’t part of how we showed love, I didn’t realize how much they mattered until I lost them.
This piece is my way of holding onto that feeling. The flap embodies the hugs I am longing for, while the warm light slowly radiates through the molded leather, echoing the fading warmth that still lingers within me.
In Need of a Hug is the result of a thorough process where design, research, and craftsmanship converge. Through years of experimentation and leather manipulation, the piece was developed to stand independently without any internal structural support.
Each stage—from selecting and molding the leather in-house stitching and assembling the hardware—was guided by precision and care. The lighting mechanism is seamlessly integrated, allowing warm light to radiate through the surface without visible bulbs. Exposed stitching and hardware reveal the process itself, embodying the studio’s pursuit of balance between structure, illumination, and the intimate dialogue between maker and material.
